Wine is not just business. It’s a social act.

Introducing Vita Nova – A Valtellina winery with a mission beyond profit.

We believe wine can – and must – tell a bigger story. A story of people, place, passion… and purpose. That’s why today, we’re not just presenting a new producer – we’re sharing a mission.

In the steep, heroic vineyards of Valtellina, nestled in the heart of the Italian Alps, a group of volunteers is doing something extraordinary. Their name is Vita Nova – and no, they are not a traditional winery. They’re an agricultural cooperative, cultivating about 3 hectares of Nebbiolo (called Chiavennasca here) on terraced slopes as steep as 30%. Every vine, every stone wall restored, every grape harvested – is an act of dedication and silent resilience.

Their goal? Not profit. Not market share. But to support the Operazione Mato Grosso, a network of social missions in Latin America. Every bottle they sell contributes directly to humanitarian projects, giving opportunity and dignity to people in need.

Let’s be clear: Tendervino will not earn a single cent from these wines. No commission, no percentage. We promote Vita Nova because we believe in what they do – and we invite you, operators of Canada and Scandinavia, to believe in it too.

By bringing Vita Nova wines into your market, you’re not just introducing an elegant, authentic taste of Valtellina – you are giving meaning to every sip.

🎤 A Conversation with Stefano, from Vita Nova

What inspired the creation of the Vita Nova Cooperative?
“Vita Nova was born in 2024, but its roots go back to 2014, when a group of us – volunteers returning from years of mission work in Latin America – felt the need to continue a life of service back in Italy. We chose agriculture because it’s real, it’s humble and it allows us to live by our values. Every cent we earn goes to the missions of Operazione Mato Grosso.”

How do you manage to sustain such a challenging project without profit?
“We live simply and we’re supported by a larger community. The vineyards we work on have been donated in use by local farmers. Much of our time is volunteer-based. What drives us is not financial return, but a sense of duty, gratitude, and the belief that beauty and goodness can be cultivated together.”

What is the philosophy behind your winemaking?
“We farm about 3 hectares of Nebbiolo, mostly on steep terraces. Everything is done by hand – restoring dry-stone walls, planting over 12,000 new vines, and working with the old ones, many over 30 years old. Our yields are low, around 40–60 quintals per hectare, but the quality is high. We use no herbicides except under the row, and we try to preserve the biodiversity of our vineyards as much as possible.”

What makes Vita Nova different from other wineries in Valtellina?
“We don’t see wine as a product – we see it as a message. Every bottle we produce carries with it a story of effort, resilience, and hope. Our wines don’t just represent the terroir of Valtellina, they also represent our community and the people we support in the Andes.”

And your logo – it seems full of meaning too…
“It is. The flower of Vita Nova is made from a single thread – the thread of life. The four petals represent the values transmitted to us by Father Ugo De Censi, founder of Operazione Mato Grosso: white for Silence, brown for Manual Labor, green for Art and Nature, and red for the ability to Give and Lose. That’s the essence of who we are.”

The Wines

  • PERLEGIA D.O.C.G.
100% Nebbiolo aged 18 months in oak and 12 months in bottle. Full-bodied, elegant, with notes of black cherry jam and a persistent plum finish.

  • FREGÉE I.G.T.
A white vinified Nebbiolo – fresh, mineral, unexpected. A tribute to the versatility of the grape and the purity of its alpine terroir.

  • ROCCASCISSA D.O.C.
Ruby red, floral and vibrant. Fruity and savory with delicate tannins. A perfect expression of mountain Nebbiolo with a modern soul.

These are wines made with hands, heart and hope. Wines that carry a message far greater than taste alone.

So let’s remind the world that sustainability is also social. And that sometimes, the best way to sell wine is to serve something bigger than ourselves.
